Holiday Retail Results & 2016 Predictions + What We've Been Reading

1. Wall Street Journal: Holiday Sales Rise, but Not All Retailers Are Cheery
Consumers didn’t pull back as much as feared during the holidays, but their late spending surge didn’t help retailers that were ill-equipped to deal with changes in behavior that will last beyond the season.Retail sales rose 3.3% from Oct. 31 through Jan. 4, about the same pace as they grew the previous year, according to First Data Corp., which processes credit-card transactions and analyzed payments at 1.3 million retailers.

2. Associated PressMobile shopping spike spurred holiday retail sales: ComScore
Total online spending during November and December rose 13 per cent to $69.08 billion from $61.29 billion last year, slightly short of the 14 per cent rise comScore, based in Reston, Virginia, was expecting.

3. Retail DiveJ.C. Penney posts strong holiday sales as others struggle

J.C. Penney has been somewhat lackluster when it comes to e-commerce, a situation that comes with a silver lining. The upside is that the company has room for improvement. The retailer apparently managed to ignite some e-commerce growth in time for the holidays, saying it had “record” web sales during November and December.

It was a reversal of fortunes this crucial selling season, with the usually resilient Macy's reporting late Wednesday that sales in stores open at least a year slumped 5.2 percent between November and December. Macy's is now cutting up to 4,800 jobs, reorganizing operations and closing 40 stores. It also slashed its profit outlook.Macy's estimated that 80 percent of its decline was weather-related. J.C. Penney said warm weather did cut into clothing sales but there were other strong sellers that offset that weakness.
